Your garage door is the largest single element on the exterior of your home, so a new one can have a huge influence on your home’s curb appeal. If you have an older garage door, you’re likely looking for a modern & efficient upgrade.

Once you’ve shopped & found the one for you, you’re ready for installation. There are a few things you can do to prepare and help the installation process go as smoothly as possible!

Remove all vehicles from the garage

The installers will need clear access to the entire garage. Be sure to remove your vehicles from the garage and park them out of the way of the garage door (if possible) before the installers arrive. This allows the installers to park directly in front of the garage door opening.

Clean the work area

Once you’ve moved your vehicle, make sure that the areas on both sides of the door are clear. Move any yard equipment, sports gear, and other items to the back of the garage if possible. The installers will need unimpeded access to those areas to hang the door, install the opener, and more. Be sure that there is enough room for them to set up a ladder, move the existing door, and assemble the new door and opening system.

Keep children and pets away from the work area

Be sure to put your pets in a safe place during the installation. Children should also keep a safe distance from the work area. The removal and installation of your garage door includes items under spring tension, heavy items, overhead items, and more – so the installer needs to be sure that the work area is safe for themselves and the residents of the home.

Consider locations for the opener, wall consoles, or keyless entry pads

The standard location for the wall console is next to the personnel door that enters the garage. The exterior keyless entry pad is typically installed on the left side exterior jamb of the garage door. If you would like a special location, please be sure that the sales associate and installer are aware to ensure your controls are mounted in your preferred location.

Prepare any questions to ask the installers

Make a list of any questions about safety inspections, warranty, remote control programming, or anything else. If you have a vehicle that features a built-in garage door control and you’d like it programmed, be sure to ask your installer for assistance.
